WELCOME TO MY PORTFOLIO
JAMES SHEPHERD

This is my copper art self portrait.
I’m james, the artist behind the artwork.
I love the tactile involvement in creating copper art.
Repousse' art is an old traditional copper craft.
My technique is forming images into copper by using hand held tools working on soft and hard surfaces, alternatively from the front and back of the copper, which is the art of repousse' reverse embossing to make handcrafted copper.

Vintage work Circa 1990's
These are a few of my copper art works still available from the 1990's through to the 2000's.
These were the last pieces of handcrafted copper during this period with the exception of a few commissioned pieces only from this time until the present.

About
I started my artisan life with oil on canvas painting, moving onto copper art in my twenties at which time I had a permanent stall in the famous Covent Garden craft Market in central London in the 1970's.I then taught myself to paint in digital oils and watercolour on a PC using digital painting software.
After many years I have moved back to copper art as I have always had a deep natural connection to the rustic organic feel and texture that you get with the hands on techniques used to craft and emboss copper foil.
I tend to be drawn to the natural handcrafted appearence, which I find infinitely more beautiful and far more interesting than the flawless perfection of manufactured pieces.I love how it communicates so much of the tactile feel you get when working on the copper as the creator to your audience who will always continue the tactile experience.
